My Junior Year of College

Hello Everyone!

I know, it's been over a year since I've updated and much has happened. For those of you that don't know, I "went abroad" for my Spring Term 2008 to the Lawrence London Centre, and experienced all that London has to offer. I really got into Shakespeare while I was over there, taking an intense class on it and going to numerous plays every week. Feel free to check out the links, they are interesting ones!

Some Exciting Events in my travels:

Took a "Ten Day Break" with one of my roommates to Barcelona, train to Rome, and train to Venice
Saw an international England vs. USA Football game, with David Beckham, et al
Saw an English league game, of the Watford Hornets, where the famous footballer Jay Demerit plays (Bay Port Grad '97?). Got to meet him afterwords, free tix. (Mr. Demerit the middleschool gym teacher's son)
http://www.watfordfc.premiumtv.co.uk/page/ProfilesDetail/0,,10400~30900,00.html

Met up with my roommate's twin unexpectedly in the middle of Rome.
Did a 4 day homestay in Cornwall, England with an older couple, visiting the probable site of King Arthur's Castle (Tintagel Castle) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tintagel_Castle
Roamed Hyde Park / Kensington Gardens area of London quite a lot
Went on a Jack-the-Ripper Walk, reliving the terrors
Saw the graves of Karl Marx, Douglas Adams, and the skeleton or "auto-icon" of Jeremy Bentham at UCL
http://www.ucl.ac.uk/Bentham-Project/info/jb.htm
Also did a homestay in the beautiful Dundalk, Ireland
Went to a Cryptozoology talk at University College London, where a "cryptozoologist" entertained with his quests to find such myths like Bigfoot, Loch Ness Monster, and La Chupacabra..
Saw the infamous revolt on the Tube of the alcohol ban on all public transportation, leading to a historic 24 hour party on the cramped space of train-cars, affectionately termed "The Booze Tube"
http://afp.google.com/article/ALeqM5iuPoXfAkDoeiG5GZntB0NJZg6fTQ
Visited Oxford, England - seeking the Harry Potter film locations, and the site of Roger Bannister's historic 1954 breaking of the 4 minute mile! 3:59.4. The closest I've gotten is 5:09. lolll
When my family came to vacation for a week after classes ended, we saw the huge rehearsal for (non-tourists.. heh) the Queen's Birthday, thousands of redcoats, horses and cannons
Raced my brother in the Crisis 5k, started by the former mayor of London, Ken Livingstone (he lost to the conservative yuppie Boris Johnson 52-48) where we ran down the River Thames

....

My 2nd summer of Genetics research has culminated in a poster session, talk, and future studies perhaps.

Currently, I am training for the upcoming Lawrence Cross Country season (LUCC!)
http://www.lawrence.edu/athletics/xcountry/finchprofile.shtml
We recently got a new coach, after our old one unexpectedly resigned. Our new coach has coached Gold Medal winning Olympians, so we're running a lot more... but it's an awesome team, and I will never get this opportunity the rest of my life. I feel like I'm training for the recent Beijing Olympics, lol.

Sam is running quite a bit as well, and quite a bit faster, if you can't tell from this link...

This past summer (I had no summer 'break' from the time I got back from London to here at Lawrence) I continued in my paid worm research (genetics with C. elegans for those science buffs out there). I played raquetball a ton, learned tennis, and rehabbed my blown out knee (from last November, ugh) and am now running 60+ miles a week on it. I agonized with the whole of Green Bay over the Favre Debacle. ugh

My Cross Country Season Schedule:
Sept 13 - Whitewater
Sept 27 - Loyola Lakefront Inv. - Chicago
Oct 11 - Parkside
Oct 18 - Oshkosh
Nov 1 - Midwest Conference Championships - Knox, IL
(if you're interested in seeing something like this, talk to me)

Just got The Office: Season 4, and am looking forward to watching that, studying for the MCAT (planning on a May/ June test date). Looking forward to a tough academic year as well, Physics and Organic Chemistry Winter Term, etc.

See you all as soon as possible,
May not update until next year this time. Much will have happened by then...

Paul

p.s. we had the gallon challenge a couple weeks ago, and it was a splashing success..! There is a fantastic video on facebook too. The end pukings set to the 1812 Overture...haha

Preseason: LUXC

Well,
I'm all moved in at college with my roommate (Bryce) until the spring, when I leave for my glorious Spring Term spent in London. The reason I moved in so early was because I started my Preseason Cross Country practice... which is pretty intense. We moved in last Saturday Aug. 18th, and practice until school starts, sometime around September 24th. Over a month of just running, every day (only 32 miles this week..). Sweet, and besides it's a lot more fun than I expected.

For instance.... today I drove an assortment of eager freshmen in my pimpin' red minivan (thanks mom!) to buy gallons of milk for the 'Milk Challenge.'  Now, I'm sure everyone knows the rules to a "Gallon Challenge," but for those who aren't familiar, a bunch of guys (usually... and in this case, a bunch of geeky, skinny runners) try to drink a gallon of milk in a given time period (we said 60 minutes). I was the cameraman, and videotaped the spectacular spewing fireworks near the end... only one guy finished and kept his cool. Pretty amazing, considering we tried to make him laugh, etc.

As for the end of summer, I had finished my summer research job in the worm lab in spectacular form: gave a presentation / speech, filmed a "worm" porn video, of which I show every person that sets foot in my room.. heh

Oh, and I recently started playing WoW again... poor choice?? maybe, but I swear I'll stop when school starts. A couple of guys on my floor wanted me to play with them, so I obliged.

I recently took a day trip to Madison to visit the Gardiner gurlz and Jessica, which was a great time. So much to do in Madison, even if it involves taking midnight runs to J.J.'s apartment. I really want to go back and see those guys when school is in session, but I have a feeling that I will be extremely busy (as I always am) for this first (fall) term here at LU.

p.s. It is interesting to note that I only write in Xanga to 'bookend' my summer by chronicling only the beginning and end.

p.s.s. Oh, I just bought: Snakes on a Plane, 300, & borrowed 40 Year Old Virgin. aha which one do you like the most?

Go BPCC and LUCC and SAMB-IST-AS!

Paul

2nd Week of Summer~!

Here I am, still in Appleton, after my school year ended. However, my summer job is working in a biology laboratory on C. elegans, a nematode (roundworm) as large as the thickness of a dime. I come back fairly frequently on weekends, and to play in the Green Bay City Band, but I have an apartment / 'summer housing' here on the Lawrence campus. I keep running, in hopes of joining the LU Cross Country team and staying in shape.

Hope everyone is having a splendid start to summer!
Make it a useful one, but relax! (that's what I tell myself)

May Flowers

Just got off of a 4 day weekend blast! Spring Term Reading Period Break - which included some much needed relaxation.

        Activities:
State Solo Ensemble events galore, a cold Bay Port Track Meet in shorts and t-shirt, Barnes & Nobles Ben / D-Rock jam session, dinner with the family and friends, visited some teachers, mowed the lawn, ran, went golfing with jason poupore (who had class that exact time..), and then finally sat-sunday I went to Brent's cabin with Dave, Alex & (Brent) to mess around and go 4-wheeling. Hilarious times, chronicled on the latest of my 49 photo album collection on Facebook.

I just watched a terrible Spanish movie: "Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios" para credito extra en Espanol!
The only reason I watched it was because Antonio Banderas was in it, which I didn't recognize really until the end of the movie.

This summer:  My plans are to work here in Appleton as a Biology Research Assistant in a LU biology lab working 40 hr / week living in Plantz Hall dormitory, commuting home Tues / Wed. to play in the Green Bay City Band every Wednesday at St. James Park in GB at 7:30 pm.. if you want to see me - hit it up! I have a lot of fun there, and now even more people I know are playing in it this summer. Ashley Zipperer Congrats! (and also on S & E awards this past weekend!)

Derek made my day this past week (no-entire week!) by calling me and telling me he is coming to LU next fall.

Good Luck APUSH / AP students everywhere! Happy Cramming!
*don't buy energy drinks for the test... i've heard bad things!

It's my Birthday! na na na hey judie

Nothing like an early morning rise on my Birthday! Yay, we went out to a pancake house in Appleton - dressed for success, business suits, ties, etc. I am tired from last night when I went to Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) as a part of the PreMedical Interviewing dinner / tour they had there. I really enjoyed the entire ordeal, including the interview and have become very excited to work towards going there. The table / room where I was interviewed had about 30 brains sitting in plastic containers 10 feet from me, I got to look inside! Jason Vizelka was there too!! I got to talk with him quite a bit about school, life, etc.

Tonight I get to go to my brother's track meet, Frosh / Soph. Invit. @ Oshkosh and hopefully hang out with Justin Mason there.

I've really gotten into "The Office" the American - Steve Carell version. I'm on Season 2, anyone else??

So, I saw the Blue Man Group with Ben Broerman at the Resch about a week ago, and it was phenomenal! so much fun into a show, and plus, the BP Science team repeated their 1st place performance at the Academic Meet.

Do any of you haave any "updawg" ??

I'm reallly enjoying my upper level Spanish class, so stimulating.

aDios!
Paul
